January 4, 2017

Participants will learn about the ELA Literacy Standards for History/Social Studies within the Iowa Core. In addition, time will be spent on an overview of the six instructional shifts needed to fully implement the Iowa Core. A more in-depth analysis of two of the instructional shifts - disciplinary literacy and the use of informational text will also be a central part of the professional development. Social studies best practices and examples will be used throughout the two days.

Building Literacy in Social Studies for Grades 6-12

June 8-9, 2017 - Year 1

Participants will learn about the ELA Literacy Standards for History/Social Studies within the Iowa Core. In addition, time will be spent on an overview of the six instructional shifts needed to fully implement the Iowa Core. June 13-14, 2017 - Year 2

Participants will learn four of the six shifts within the Iowa Core in Literacy for History/Social Studies standards and how they apply to a social studies classroom. These shifts include academic vocabulary, text complexity, text based evidence and argument, and writing from sources. The other shifts, as a well as an introduction to the standards were covered in the professional development offered during the 2014-2015 school year. Social studies best practices and examples will be used throughout the two days.
