While sometimes the language and terms can be intertwined and confusing, there is a growing focus in districts on supporting social, emotional and behavioral health needs.
- At Grant Wood Area Education Agency, Social, Emotional, Behavioral Health (SEBH) is the language we use to refer to mental health and behavioral wellbeing. SEBH affects how we think, feel, communicate, act, and learn.
- Social Emotional Learning (SEL) refers to the foundational knowledge and skills that promote our social, emotional, behavioral health and wellbeing. Social, Emotional Learning includes how we relate to others, respond to stress and emotions, and make choices. The five conceptual areas of social emotional learning include Self Awareness, Social Awareness, Self Management, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making.
Using an MTSS Framework to Support SEBH
Our agency staff believe that utilizing a framework that consists of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) not only allows schools to respond to SEBH- related challenges, but also supports the creation of protective factors that promote the health and well-being of all. Schools with a strong multi-tiered system of support for SEBH (MTSS-SEBH/Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), use data to identify needs and make decisions about how to respond by engaging in evidence based practices aligned to those needs at all tiers. Research shows that when implemented with fidelity, climate and culture are improved, social, emotional, behavioral health needs are addressed and there is increased equity in student outcomes.
SEBH Learning Opportunities at GWAEA
GWAEA offers multiple professional learning opportunities and provides coaching support to districts who want to establish an evidence based multi-tiered system of support for SEBH
