About Hearing Screenings and Grant Wood AEA

These three special outreach events are in addition to the hearing screenings already made available through Grant Wood AEA. The AEA has audiologists and audiometrists on staff who perform hearing screenings for children from birth-graduation in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties. Students might be screened by Grant Wood AEA staff in one of several ways:

  • Hearing screening/testing is conducted directly at most public and parochial school buildings for students in alternative kindergarten, kindergarten, first, second and fifth grades, and also for students with Individualized Education Plan (IEPs) who are enrolled in district sponsored preschool programs.

  • Other students who are new to a school who don’t have a documented hearing test, and some students with a history of known hearing loss also may be tested.

  • Screenings are also available for infants and young children not yet enrolled in school at Grant Wood AEA’s Cedar Rapids and Coralville offices where the agency has two sound booths available.

About Vision Screenings and Iowa KidSight

Iowa KidSight, a vision-screening program of the Lions Clubs of Iowa and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, offers free vision screenings for children six months old through kindergarten. After a trained Lions Club volunteer completes a screening, the results are interpreted by vision specialists at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. If a potential vision problem is detected, parents will receive a referral letter and a list of local ophthalmologists and optometrists to contact for further eye care.
